Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a new air conditioner when mine fails?

It depends upon what caused your existing air conditioning system to fail. An older AC that is correctly repaired may still offer years of cost-effective use. But, to ensure an older unit lasts, routine maintenance is a necessity. Donovan offers a Preferred Customer Program with options. This program allows our Atlantic Beach AC technician to keep your system properly serviced, and we will let you know when it is time to consider a replacement unit.

My AC is relatively new, can’t you just add refrigerant?

When an AC is installed during cooler weather, the installer may not have put the amount of refrigerant as specified by the manufacturer. This can cause the performance and efficiency of a new unit to be less than expected. However, adding refrigerant to a system that is already full can create unwanted problems. So, it is important to have a highly trained technician inspect the system, repair any leaks, test the repair and charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant.

Why Are my summer utility bills so high?

When you live in Atlantic Beach, your air conditioner is called on every day to manage the hot humid air trapped in your home. So, summer utility bills tend to run higher than normal. A lack of regular AC maintenance, a clogged air filter, a poorly sized system, leaving the windows open, leaky ducts and a bad thermostat are just a few of the energy vampires commonly found in area homes. We can perform whole house testing to identify causes related to excessive power bills.

Can I clean and reuse my air conditioner filter?

Some types of air conditioner filters are reusable but most AC filters must be replaced. If you have a standard filter, you shouldn’t try to clean it. A new filter will protect your evaporator coil from collecting dirt. When airflow is obstructed by a dirty filter, a soiled coil will reduce your system’s ability to absorb heat. If your air conditioner is in constant use or subject to dusty conditions, you should change the filter once a month to remove any buildup of dust, pet hair or debris.

Is it really necessary to inspect my AC ducts?

For a central air conditioning system to work efficiently, the duct work must be airtight. It is an enormous waste of energy when cool air escapes from supply ducts. Some studies have suggested that up to 30% of conditioned air may escape through the ducts. Although leaky ducts can be difficult to find, our Atlantic Beach AC repair technician has the experience and equipment to detect and correct any duct leak.

Should my air conditioner ducts be insulated?

Yes. The large temperature difference between the attic space and ducts makes heat conduction through the duct work almost as big a problem as leaky ducts. So, the ducts in your attic should be properly insulated in addition to being airtight. We are highly experienced at working with duct work installed over several generations of local construction.

Does it save energy if my AC keeps turning off?

Although it is normal for an air conditioning system to go through cycles of cooling your home and shutting off, your AC should not be going through cycles fast or frequent. This is called “short cycling”. Short cycling will spike your power bill, put unnecessary wear and tear on equipment and cause temperature swings. The most common culprits are a clogged air filter, iced evaporator coils, low refrigerant and an improperly sized system. Best advice is to schedule an Atlantic Beach AC repair.

Would buying a bigger air conditioner cool better?

It might but there are many important variables. The efficiency, performance, durability and cost of operation of your air conditioner depend upon matching the size of the unit to your home. Our whole house testing can determine how much air leaks in and out of your home. This information coupled with the size of your home, the number windows and doors, the amount of insulation, the amount of shade as well as the number occupants will be used to correctly size a new system.

Do I need a replacement unit or a new AC system?

In Atlantic Beach air conditioning systems range from brand new to decades old, so there is no one-size fits all solution. As manufacturers continue to add new technology to compressors, air handlers, ductwork, fans, thermostats and other components, there is a point where the monthly savings from a more energy efficient system must be considered. At Donovan Air, Electric & Plumbing, our goal is to always get the best return on your investment in a replacement unit or completely new air conditioning system.

Who is responsible for debris removal for a complete system renovation?

Our crews have years of experience in removing existing central heating and air conditioning systems. They will cover flooring and other elements as needed to remove old ductwork, piping, wiring and equipment. For a complete system renovation, you will need a dumpster rental for collecting construction debris. With narrow streets throughout, Atlantic Beach dumpster rental equipment and trucks must be residential friendly.
