New SEER 2 HVAC Energy Efficiency Regulations May Have a Costly Impact on Homeowners

Thinking of upgrading your HVAC system? Well, the time is now. For decades, Donovan has strived to keep our customers informed about any safety, comfort, or energy cost issues. Beginning January 1, 2023, new residential central air-conditioning and air-source heat pump systems will be required to meet seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) minimum efficiency standards as dictated by the U.S. Department of Energy. This regulatory change may dramatically increase the cost to replace your air conditioner or heat pump next year. That is why it is extremely important to get your new unit installed by December 31, 2022, and the professionals at Donovan are ready to help.

SEER 2 increases minimum efficiency standards from SEER 14 to SEER 15. Higher SEER ratings indicate more energy-efficient equipment, potentially lower energy costs, and environmental benefits resulting from reduced energy consumption. The more efficient new systems produced in 2023 should have longer life expectancies, which is a remarkably long-term. However, we would be remiss if we did not share why our professionals strongly advise you to set up a consultation and upgrade your system now.

Homeowners may potentially face:

·     INCREASED COST:   All AC and Heat Pump systems built after 12/31 will have enhanced circuitry, controls, and valves – driving prices up 18% – 30%! That means it will be more expensive for homeowners.

·     REDUCED OPTIONS:  Unfortunately, businesses will not be able to sell “old” AC units past Jan 1, 2023, that do not meet new requirements, and space or budget limitations may also cause limited choices.

·     INCREASED SIZE:  Inside system dimensions will have to allow for larger coils.

We understand that a new cooling system is a major financial investment for most homeowners so if your unit is LESS THAN 9 YEARS OLD, we suggest ensuring the lifespan of your system by keeping up with annual maintenance.

If your unit is MORE THAN 9 YEARS OLD, consider investing in a new system with 18 month, no interest, special financing. At 9 years, parts warranties will end within 12 months (10 years after install), and any needed major repairs may be costly outside the warranty period.

Donovan is here to assist you through this transition, as well as, help you save money. If you need help deciding which system will work best for your home and budget, contact us today.
